Shopify Payments Payout Hold Release Kit illustrated overview

Emergency hub

Your Shopify Payments payout is on hold.

The deposit you were counting on did not land, or Shopify admin is asking the store owner for documents. Save the notice, name the restriction, and put one document packet together before you reply. Treat held payouts as unavailable until Shopify shows a change. Shopify decides what happens next.

First hour

Do these before you reply in admin.

Work in order. Answer the banner, then protect cash.

The free Shopify Payments payout hold checklist walks through the admin check, a copyable support reply, and the cash checklist.

If the notice is not clearly Shopify Payments, classify the hold first with the payment processor payout-hold triage, then come back here once Shopify Payments is the account that has the money.

Which notice

Match the notice before you reply.

Read the words in the Shopify admin banner or the store owner email, then open the guide and the kit on that row. The price is the one-time Stripe price. A bank-detail pause, a tax-detail hold, and a failed payout use the same Shopify kit as a document request, because the catalog has one kit for those notices. The last two rows are a reserve and a card dispute. Do not send a Shopify packet for those.

The public source for an account hold is Shopify's help page, Shopify Payments account holds. It says a hold notice arrives in the Shopify admin or by email to the store owner, and only the store owner can resolve it. The email address is the one under Settings, then Users and permissions, on the store owner profile. You can keep working in the store, but you cannot receive Shopify Payments payouts until the reason for the hold is resolved. In most cases customers can still check out, and you are not paid for those orders until the hold is resolved. In some cases the store cannot accept new orders. Confirm that on the banner or the owner email. Shopify says the fastest path is to provide the information requested and reply directly to the email from Shopify. Check spam, and confirm the email is legitimate before you click a link or send banking information. A creditor or legal hold is different: Shopify says it cannot remove that hold, and only the payment processor can remove it after the creditor sends a release. Shopify decides whether a document packet resolves any other hold.

For payout timing, bank-detail pauses, tax-detail holds, and review delays, use Shopify's payout timing guide. It says to start with admin alerts and the store owner email. A review can hold payouts for reasons such as chargebacks, compliance checks, customer complaints, high-risk orders, fulfillment issues, or extra verification. Changing the payout bank to a new external account, or adding a bank more than 24 hours after setup, pauses payouts for 3-5 business days. That pause does not apply when you switch the payout destination to a Shopify Balance account. If you use multi-currency payouts, adding or replacing a bank for one currency can pause payouts to all of your payout accounts. A tax-detail problem can also hold payouts until you answer the request. A higher-risk account can be placed on a custom schedule of 5-20 business days, and Shopify says Support cannot shorten that settlement time on request. After a payout is sent, the bank may take another 1-3 business days to show the deposit. Those are Shopify's published timing notes, not a release date for your store.

A reserve is a different notice from an account hold. Shopify's reserves overview says a reserve is a temporary hold on a portion, and in some cases the full amount, of Shopify Payments transactions for a set period. Reserves generally do not stop you from accepting payments unless Shopify says otherwise. Terms arrive by email. A reserve can be a fixed amount or a percentage of each transaction. You can see payout balance and reserved funds on the payouts page. To appeal, reply to the reserve email within the time it states. Some reserves cannot be appealed. If the email lists requirements instead of an appeal, Shopify says the reserve is removed automatically after you meet them. Before the expiry date, a review can keep, reduce, or raise the reserve. If it is not extended, the reserved amount is included in upcoming payouts, and it can take several business days to process. Shopify decides.

Evidence

Proof that matches the Shopify admin notice.

A reviewer should see the same legal name, website, bank, and offer in the notice and in the files. Send the records that answer the request Shopify showed, not every document on the drive.

Evidence checklist

  • Admin banner, store owner email, and a screenshot of payout status
  • Entity or identity records, only if Shopify asked for them
  • Bank record that matches the payout account, with full account numbers redacted
  • Tax or business-detail records if the notice names a mismatch
  • Website, refund policy, and fulfillment proof for the orders under review
  • Dispute, refund, and chargeback log if the notice points at buyer disputes

When the pause is not only a Shopify Payments hold.

The kit in the header is the Shopify Payments payout-hold file, including a bank-detail pause, a tax-detail hold, and a failed payout. Use the merchant kit when Shopify shows a reserve and the store still takes payments. Use the chargeback kit when disputes are the driver. Keep each case in its own file.

FAQ

Questions owners ask when Shopify Payments pauses a payout.

What should I do in the first hour after Shopify Payments puts my payout on hold?

Sign in to the Shopify admin, save the banner, and open the store owner email, including spam. Write down whether checkout, refunds, and payouts still work, and name the restriction from the words on the notice. Gather only the documents that request asks for, send one labeled reply through the path Shopify showed, and plan the week from cleared cash. Do not treat a new store as the fix, and do not send bank or identity records to an unverified address. Shopify's account-hold page says to provide the requested information and reply directly to the email from Shopify: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/payouts/account-holds.

Can customers still check out while a Shopify Payments payout is on hold?

Not always. Shopify's account-hold page says that in most cases customers can still check out while payouts are on hold, and you are not paid for those orders until the hold is resolved. In some cases the store cannot accept new orders. Confirm that on the admin banner or the store owner email before you take more orders you cannot fulfill from confirmed cash. See https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/payouts/account-holds.

How long can a bank change or a review delay Shopify Payments payouts?

Shopify's payout timing page says that changing the payout destination to a new external bank account, or adding a payout bank more than 24 hours after setup, pauses payouts for 3-5 business days. That pause does not apply when you switch the payout destination to a Shopify Balance account. Other reviews can still affect timing. A higher-risk account can be placed on a custom schedule of 5-20 business days, and Shopify says Support cannot shorten that settlement time on request. After a payout is sent, the bank may take another 1-3 business days to show the deposit. These are published timing notes, not a release date for your store. See https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/payouts/payout-periods.

What is the difference between a Shopify Payments payout hold and a reserve?

An account hold blocks Shopify Payments payouts until the reason is resolved, and only the store owner can resolve it. A reserve is a temporary hold on a portion, or in some cases the full amount, of transactions for a set period. Shopify says reserves generally do not stop you from accepting payments unless it says otherwise, and the terms arrive by email. Some reserves can be appealed by reply within the stated time. Some cannot. If the email lists requirements instead of an appeal, Shopify says the reserve is removed after you meet them. Shopify decides. Account holds: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/payouts/account-holds. Reserves: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/payouts/reserves.

Where is the free Shopify Payments payout-hold guide?

The free guide is at https://businessfixkits.com/blog/shopify-payments-payout-hold-small-business. It covers the admin check, a copyable support reply, and the cash checklist. If you are not sure the hold is Shopify Payments, the broader triage is at https://businessfixkits.com/blog/payment-processor-payout-hold-triage. Shopify's account-hold steps are at https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments/payouts/account-holds. The $39 kit adds the evidence organizer, payout tracker, reply variants, cash triage worksheet, and prevention review.

What do I get with the Shopify Payments Payout Hold Release Kit?

Buy it at https://businessfixkits.com/products/shopify-payments-payout-hold-release-kit. It is a one-time $39 purchase, checked out with Stripe. After checkout you get an instant download: a PDF walkthrough, editable templates and scripts, and a tracker for the notice, evidence, reply, and follow-up. The same kit is the file for a document request, a bank-detail pause, a tax-detail hold, and a failed payout. It is educational. It does not guarantee that Shopify will release a payout or change a reserve.

Does this page guarantee Shopify will release my payout?

No. Shopify decides hold status, reserves, and payout timing. The kit organizes the file so you can submit one factual packet. It is not legal, banking, or financial advice, and it does not replace Shopify's policies.

What if the notice is a reserve, a chargeback, or not clearly Shopify Payments?

If the notice is not clearly Shopify Payments, start with the payout-hold triage at https://businessfixkits.com/blog/payment-processor-payout-hold-triage. If Shopify shows a reserve and the store still takes payments, use the merchant reserve guide at https://businessfixkits.com/blog/merchant-account-reserve-hold-release-small-business and the Merchant Account Payout Hold Release Kit ($49). If buyer disputes are the driver, use the chargeback guide at https://businessfixkits.com/blog/how-to-fight-a-chargeback-and-win and the Chargeback Evidence Response Guide ($49). A creditor or legal hold is not a document packet: Shopify's account-hold page says Shopify cannot remove that hold, and only the payment processor can remove it after the creditor sends a release. Do not paste one processor's reply into another.

Is All-Access membership a better buy than the single kit?

All-Access is $29/mo at the Founding Member rate, locked for life while you keep the membership. It includes the current kit library, including this payout-hold kit, while the membership is active. Cancel anytime. After the founding window closes, new members pay $39/mo. If you only need this one Shopify file, the $39 one-time kit is the direct purchase. The one-time kit is yours to keep. Membership access lasts while the membership is active.

Clear guidance, not a payout promise.

This hub is an educational first-hour path for a real store. Shopify decides whether a hold is resolved, a reserve changes, or a payout is sent, and when. Nothing here is legal, banking, or financial advice, and nothing here is permission to invent documents or hide the real offer.
