A business utility shutoff notice contains two dates, and only one matters: the disconnection date, not the bill due date. Write it at the top of the file, then identify the notice stage - past-due reminder, disconnection notice, or final 48-to-72-hour notice - because the stage tells you how fast to move and how expensive the fix will be.

Before paying anything, reconcile the balance against your records. Estimated meter reads, leaks, rate changes, and misapplied payments inflate balances regularly, and paying a wrong bill is as costly as ignoring a right one. If part of the balance is genuinely wrong, most utilities cannot disconnect over an amount under active formal dispute - as long as you pay the undisputed portion and keep current charges paid.

She calls the commercial line, disputes the estimated portion in writing the same day, pays the undisputed amount, and gets a dispute reference number.
